I've been defending The Heartbreak Kid ever since it hit theaters back in 2007, however, I didn't feel comfortable putting my argument in writing until having seen the original film. I've come across a handful of reviews and a number of moviegoers who chastise the Farrelly brothers for not having stuck closer to the iconic source material. I thought that perhaps after having seen the 1972 version, I wouldn't be as eager to sing the update's praises, but what happened is actually the opposite; seeing the original only made me appreciate the newer version even more.

For those out of the loop, The Heartbreak Kid, both the original and the Farrelly brother's film, is about a guy who marries a wonderful girl only to learn about a few new quirks while on their honeymoon. Actually, that's not all he discovers; our leading man finds a new girl, a better girl. Where the films veer in completely opposite directions is in the comedy. Think about past Farrelly films, the best and the worst. There's Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary, Shallow Hal and more. What do all of these films have in common? The humor is outrageous and that's exactly how The Heartbreak Kid remake was approached, which instantly differentiates from the original.

In fact, the first Heartbreak Kid isn't really laugh out loud funny at all; it's more of a dark comedy. The situation feels far more real. A guy really thinks he's found the woman of his dreams and takes the plunge too soon before he really gets to know her. It's a very genuine situation that every couple has to deal with at some point. Once the initial romantic bliss wears off, all of those peculiar habits start to creep out – the person has a thing for egg salad, she can't carry a tune or loves making circles in your chest hair after sex. At first, Lenny (Charles Grodin) is the one you feel sorry for, but when he starts canoodling with Kelly (Cybill Shepherd) and banishes Lila to the hotel room, you genuinely feel sorry for Lila (Jeannie Berlin). She really loves him. But that's not to say that Lenny isn't the film's hero; you can't help but to root for him the entire time. It's true love we're talking about here!

This isn't quite the case with the newer version. Everything is seemingly normal from the start. Just like the original, our hero, now named Eddie (Ben Stiller), has an idyllic experience with a beautiful woman and is confident she's the one for him. Well, also like the original, that turns out not to be the case, but, unlike the original, this Lila (Malin Akerman) doesn't just reveal a few bad habits, she goes psycho. The car ride sing-along goes from a plain old bad voice into a nonstop singing lunatic, 1972 Lila's request for Lenny to tell her how it feels mid-intercourse becomes sex mania and Lila's hidden secrets go from minor quirks to major problems. There's no juxtaposition; Lila is the lunatic and Eddie is 100% the victim and that's what makes this film funnier.

The 1972 film is more of a drama where as the 2007 version is a comedy through and through. The new version isn't supposed to feel realistic, it's just supposed to be hilarious and it is! I'll admit, a handful of a jokes fall flat. The weakest portions of the piece are those that involve the secondary characters namely Tito (Carlos Mencia), the resort's overfriendly concierge, and Miranda's family. But even in The Heartbreak Kid's laughless moments, it's still lighthearted fare and a film that keeps you smiling.

What makes it particularly memorable in the gigantic pile of romantic comedies out there is Akerman. Before Heartbreak Kid, I only knew her as Freakshow's wife from Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. She certainly contributed to one of the most unforgettable moments in that film, but she was still only a minor character. Here, not only is she part of the leading trio, she's responsible for a significant amount of the film's humor. Actually, she's the source of most of it. After seeing her play the super serious Laurie Jupiter in Watchmen, the girl next door in The Proposal and the loving wife in Couples Retreat, going back and watching The Heartbreak Kid makes her performance even more outstanding. She goes from the perfect girl to a raving lunatic in an instant. Some may call this the 2007 version's downfall, but I call it comedic genius and a testament to Akerman's ability.

I'm not out to prove that The Heartbreak Kid is the perfect film because I certainly know it's not, but I do think it took far too harsh a beating. It has a great cast, is well directed, generally funny and overall, just an enjoyable experience. On top of that, it pays homage to the original, quite a lot actually. Yes, the new version may be a bit over the top as compared to the 1972 film, but the 2007 one is peppered with instances and dialogue that harken back to the past from "grouchy" becoming "Grouchy Marx" to the sunburn incident 2.0. The connection is there, they're just of two different genres. The new Heartbreak Kid isn't as funny as the Farrelly brothers best and it's not as genuine as Elaine May's version, but that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable in its own way.

Cells have various repair systems that correct errors in DNA or prompt cell death when damage in DNA cannot be fixed. In a recent study, scientists have begun understanding the function of a specific matchmaker protein, MutL, in these repair systems. This protein may play a significant role in the future of hereditary colorectal cancer research.

MutL is important to the DNA mismatch repair pathway, which corrects errors during DNA replication. It gathers other enzymes and proteins in the cell to recognize, remove, and repair mismatched DNA. If these errors are not corrected, mutations may begin to develop and result in cancer or severe genetic disorders. Previous research has revealed that these mutations are linked to both hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer and Turcot Syndrome.

"The reason why it can lead to cancer is because if you don't have mismatch repair proteins that correct these errors, you're going to accumulate mutations. People with defective mismatch repair genes develop cancers at very early ages," said Alba Guarne, an associate professor at McMaster University.

In order to understand how MutL functions, the researchers have carefully examined the protein and its properties. They have discovered how it becomes an enzyme that fixes errors in DNA. Moreover, they have noticed that PCNA, another protein in the mismatch repair pathway, allows damaged DNA to bind to MutL. The results of this analysis may provide a new focus for future research pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary colorectal cancer. By targeting mutations on the MutL protein, scientists may be able to determine the severity of the disease and develop new therapies to treat patients.

In 2010, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 102,900 new cases of colon cancer and 39,670 new cases of rectal cancer in the United States. The findings of Guarne and her research team will hopefully reduce the death rate of colorectal cancer, which is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country.

Jim Jones, founder of the notorious Jonestown, was a close childhood friend of Dan Mitrone, an intelligence agent famous for teaching torture techniques in Latin America. There is much evidence to suggest that Jonestown was a government financed experiment in mind control and behavior modification. However, the evidence is not air tight, and all that can be concluded is that this interpretation of events there fits the facts better than the official explanation.

When Mitrone went to Brazil in 1961, Jones ,his wife , and family found a way to locate there also. Jones had adopted eight children and was described by his landlady as "a gangster who used a Bible instead of a gun." He had become a faith healer. Jones told a neighbor in Brazil that he was connected with the Office of Naval Intelligence. The US embassy provided him with a large home, transportation, and groceries. This was at a time when the US government was funding the establishment of evangelical ministries in Latin America.

After a few years, he returned to the United States with $10,000 and founded People=s Temple in Ukiah, California in 1965. Jones, a white preacher affiliated with the Disciples of Christ, had earlier founded a People=s Temple in 1954 in Indianapolis. He also established Happy Haven Rest Home. The courts sent him 1509 foster children, and he also attracted former prisoners, the elderly, and the mentally ill. He had the backing of local Republicans, the local John Birch Society, and the local chapter of World Vision, which often operated as a CIA front. In 1968 his operations worked for the Nixon presidential campaign.

Jones took social security checks and other things from his people, and some of his opponents turned up dead. Then he claimed a political conversion and said he had become a socialist and he became an outspoken opponent of US imperialism. In 1977 he moved his flock from the San Francisco Bay area to Guyana, with the help of the US embassy. Congressman Leo Ryan started looking into complaints about human rights abuses there. There is evidence that Jones supplied mercenaries for the UNITAS forces in Angola. Unable to learn much from the embassy, Ryan went to Jonestown in 1978. Ryan and four reporters were killed at the Port Kaituma airport. A Jonestown defector was killed and US Ambassador John Burke was wounded. Eye witnesses said the assassins walked mechanically, like zombies and were glassy eyed.

A mass extermination followed. 408 victims drank cyanide cocktails, the rest died in different ways. Guyanese pathologist Dr. C. Leslie Mootoo found that most of the remainder had been injected behind their left shoulder blade. Still others were shot or strangled. By most accounts, over 1200 people were there. There were 913 dead, and 167 returned to the US as survivors. There was also a well-armed, well-fed all white group of guards who were unaccounted for. A Congressional aid told the Associated Press there were about 120 brainwashed white assassins who got away from Jonestown and were ready to kill again.

Michael Prokes, an admitted FBI informant and Jones aid, said the FBI and CIA were withholding a videotape of the massacre. After he made these comments at a press conference he went to the rest room and allegedly committed suicide. Charles Beikman, an adopted son of Jones and former Green Beret, was later arrested for killing a few members of the cult in Georgetown. The body of Jones was never positively identified, but it is believed he dispatched himself with his .357 Python. Before dying, he was heard shouting AGet Dwyer out of here.@ Later Richard Dwyer , CIA deputy chief of mission and Jones friend, was found at the airstrip.

Some Black Panther and Weathermen files were found in Jonestown. Perhaps these people were to be of use in strikes against these groups. Jones had hired Mark Lane, who wrote on the JFK assassination, as his lawyer, and Lane was at the airstrip to see Ryan killed. Lane had been writing about how the CIA was trying to infiltrate the community. For whatever reason, Jones also plotted to kidnap Grace Walden Stephens and bring her to Jonestown. She was a witness to the M. L King assassination. She had seen a man running from the murder scene with a rifle and had refused to say it was James Earl Ray. Her testimony was not used at the Ray trial.

It is known that a wide variety of drugs, including truth serums, were pumped into the Jonestown population. Nearby was Hilltown, a similar experiment run by Rabbi David Hill. Still another was Johnstown. There are other cult locations in the Philippines and Chile. One can only wonder if these places have been used for mind control experiments.

Ryan was not the CIA's favorite Congressman. He had leaked damaging information to journalist Daniel Schorr and he was investigating CIA mind control experiments and possible domestic operations when he was killed. Ryan was co-author of the Hughes-Ryan Amendment that would have required the CIA to inform Congress of all its covert actions and projects. Ryan was also a source for columnist Jack Anderson, who first revealed CIA involvement in mind control experiments. Anderson also tied the kidnapping of Patty Hearst in 1974 to the agency because Donald "Cinque" De Freeze allegedly underwent some sort of programming in Vacaville, California.

In 1983 several families of the Jonestown victims sued Admiral Stansfield Turner, claiming that their loved ones died in a CIA behavior modification experiment. The agency's involvement with Jones began long before Turner became head of the CIA, and it is very unlikely that Turner, a liberal and reformer, had any idea what was going on there. Joe Hosinger, Leo Ryan's assistant and friend, said he was sure Jonestown was a CIA mind control experiment.

The People's Temple at Jonestown left behind a huge fortune in property and bank deposits in Latin America. According to the Brazilian paper Manchete ( 1/9/79), Brazilian police believe the cult supported itself through involvement in the Guyana-Bolivia-Brazil drug trade. The San Paulo police believe that Jim Jones began his involvement in the trade when he settled in Brazil in 1969.
